The results do successfully show that even after controlling for school performances, sex differences exist in academic choice; masculinity and own-sex suitability for science favour choosing science, while their effects are mediated by expectancies, interests and utility values of the academic studies.
On the other hand, the study found no significant results for the main effect of femininity, and the interactive effect between masculinity and femininity on academic choice as well as for the effect of opposite-sex suitability on academic choice.

This study differs from other studies on sex differences in achievement pattern primarily in its focus on choice, and its concern for the effect of sex-stereotypes. Instead of focusing on sex differences in achievements, the study directs attention towards sex differences in academic choice. It highlights the critical role of choice process of how sex differences are developed showing that, even with the same past performances, boys are more likely than girls to choose science. Thus, the study found that for boys and girls, masculinity favour science choice.
This implies that boys and girls differ in achievement, career or even life patterns because they make different choices. Because boys believe they are more suitable for science while girls believe the same for arts, more boys tend to choose science than girls, even though they might have had same past performances.
Lau postulates that an occupational difference between the sexes is a complex phenomenon resulting from a variety of factors. These include early socialization, educational systems, decisions and behaviour of employees and employers in the workplace as well as social forces at the macro level such as the legislation and the capitalistic dynamics.
